El Tuito is a little village in the hills about 44 kilometers from PV. Andi found it in her touring guide. El Tuito is famous for its raicilla - which is what they call mezcal. There are several distilleries there, but just as many home distillers. We went to get some authentic Jalisco mezcal. When we got to town, it was downright dead. We bought a lunch and started talking to the locals. After a while, the raicilla started coming out of the woodwork. We also bought some organic coffee from the roaster.
More of the central plaza.
Here I am with a gallon of raicilla in a second hand bottle. As I write this, I am drinking a margarita made with it. I prefer mezcal to tequila, mezcal having a more smokey flavor - sort of like single-malt scotch whiskey. The ride out there and back on the bus was an adventure of its own.
